Lipo-abdominoplasty: Modification of tummy tuck procedure
A few sophisticated or web savvy patients have heard the term "lipo-abdominoplasty" used and wondered what it meant.
As we discuss on our website or in previous blogs, there are many steps that together make up a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty). These are customized to the needs and benefits of each individual patient. Skin, fat & muscle can be treated separately. Adjacent areas of the torso can be treated. And, going further, the so-called mommy-makeover means that breast enhancement is also done.
Lipo-abdominoplasty means that there is some amount of liposuction done the the anterior abdomen at the time of skin and muscle work. This is in addition to the surgical removal (excision) of lower abdominal subcutaneous fat. Surgeons must use care in combining liposuction, to minimize certain risks. If less undermining is done, then more liposuction can be added to a tummy tuck procedure. Dr. Graham has incorporated these techniques for years, with safety and effectiveness.

Public education success in Upstate South Carolina
We were very pleased with the response to our public education efforts last night.
Dr. Graham, our patient coordinator Betty Babb, and our nurse practitioner Janice Sasser hosted a well attended presentation at a beautiful restaurant meeting room in Seneca, South Carolina (Rudy's on Ram Cat). They had some great appetizers and refreshments for our guests.
We presented information on cosmetic surgery, cosmetic medical procedures, and professional skin care. We covered breast & body, and facial procedures in two, back-to-back sessions. We offered Dr. Graham's presentation, interesting statistics, before & after photographs, periods for audience questions, and time for individual questions. We were pleased with the numbers of people in attendance and their interesting questions. Thanks to all of you that came and shared the evening with us. We hope you'll want to do it again sometime.

Breast + Tummy (times 30s - 40s) = Mommy Make-0ver: That's the formula
Families cherish their children. Their birth brings us innumerable joys. Pregnancy also effects women's bodies in many ways. Sometimes there are minimal visible after-effects, however women with more pronounced changes consult Dr. Graham to improve their situation.
Breast size, shape and firmness can change. For some women, breasts become much larger and uncomfortable; breast reduction is in order. For others, breasts sag, become much smaller, and loose their firm texture. In these situations clothes don't fit well. It becomes harder to find dresses, summer tops, and bathing suits that flatter the figure. Breast lift (mastopexy) or breast augmentation (implants) can help these situations. The two may be combined, known as augmentation mastopexy. We are impressed by how trim, toned and fit some celebrities look after bearing children, but we know they have the best help and perhaps PhotoShop enhancement. Normal women's abdomens become stretched by pregnancies, some with prominent stretch marks (known as striae). Metabolism changes and body fat accumulates in different places such as the central / lower tummy and the "love handles" or flanks and iliac regions.

Mommy Make-over is such a cute term: thoughts by Sutton Graham, MD
I don't know came up with the term, but it is certainly cleaver, "mommy-make-over." For over 15 years, we have been addressing women's concerns about their post-pregnancy changes (post-partum) with a variety of solutions for the breast and body, plus measures for the facial pigmentation, etc.
We have solutions for the breast sagging, loss of breast firmness, decrease or unwanted increase in breast size, stretch marks, loose tummy skin, loose tummy muscles, indented c-section scars, new fat accumulations about the hips, thighs, abdomen and buttocks.
Mommy make-over isn't a particular operation, but rather a combination of procedures to address each woman's concerns. They are done as an out-patient and you recover at home with you family and friends. Special anesthesia techniques are used to minimize discomfort and speed recovery.
Dr. Graham address the tummy by non-surgical skin tightening, stretch mark removal, liposuction, short-scar abdominoplasty, standard tummy tuck, and often adds liposuction of the love handles. If the problems are loose skin, stretch marks across the lower abdomen, a roll-like collection of fat, and / or poor tone of the abdominal wall then tummy tuck can improve your appearance. If you lost quite a bit of weight then you often experience some of these. On the other hand if the problem is only localized fat that doesn't respond to diet and exercise, then liposuction may be a better procedure. Some patients choose to have breast enhancement (breast lift, breast augmentation, or breast reduction) during tummy tuck. Occasionally we do unrelated procedures such as lip augmentation by fat graft or liposuction of the neck and under-chin area.

Our facility anesthesia is only delivered by Dr. Merritt Tolan, board-certified anesthesiologist with years of experience, and a wonderful caring manner. ASPS annual statistics are out. And the Top Five are...
The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) is the large national organization of board-certified plastic surgeons. Their 2008 statistics were recently published. Reconstructive surgery and minimally invasive cosmetic procedures (laser, fillers, neurotoxin) increased compared to 2007.
As expected cosmetic surgery was down, but a relatively small 9%. Articles in The New York Times (April 6th, "When All You Have Left Is Your Pride") and the Wall Street Journal ("Keeping Up Appearances") may explain why patients continue to seek care to enhance their appearance. In some circles, appearance may be critical in a time of high competition for jobs. Time Magazine had a recent article about the popularity of Botox for men.
