A few sophisticated or web savvy patients have heard the term "lipo-abdominoplasty" used and wondered what it meant.
As we discuss on our website or in previous blogs, there are many steps that together make up a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty). These are customized to the needs and benefits of each individual patient. Skin, fat & muscle can be treated separately. Adjacent areas of the torso can be treated. And, going further, the so-called mommy-makeover means that breast enhancement is also done.
Lipo-abdominoplasty means that there is some amount of liposuction done the the anterior abdomen at the time of skin and muscle work. This is in addition to the surgical removal (excision) of lower abdominal subcutaneous fat. Surgeons must use care in combining liposuction, to minimize certain risks. If less undermining is done, then more liposuction can be added to a tummy tuck procedure. Dr. Graham has incorporated these techniques for years, with safety and effectiveness.

Tighter, slimmer, toned tummy: Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck)
Dr. Sutton Graham is frequently asked to improve the size, look, tone, and contour of women's abdominal area. We offer a detailed in-person consultation that shows you what you need to know. We will send you preliminary information, discuss your health and medical history, evaluate your areas of concern, show you numbers of photographs (before & after), discuss the procedure options / benefits and risks / recovery / return to work & activities. And you'll leave the consultation with an individualized quote and detailed booklet of information. This process allows you to make a well informed decision.
Basically, tummy tuck deals with three layers; skin, fat and muscle. There are a variety of ways to accomplish your improvements, and we'll discuss them with you. (1) Excess skin is removed and the incision is hidden low on the tummy. Stretch marks are removed. Swimwear options increase. (2) Excess fat is removed and discarded. Liposuction may be combined with direct removal of fat, depending on the area of your torso. The tummy looks smaller and trimmer. The waistline improves. Clothes fit better. (3) If lax muscle wall tone is a problem, we cinch up the slack to permanently tighten the entire abdominal wall, or only an involved portion. This reduces the pregnancy-related lower tummy roundness, improves definition, and can effect posture. This achieves results exercise alone cannot.

Breast + Tummy (times 30s - 40s) = Mommy Make-0ver: That's the formula
Families cherish their children. Their birth brings us innumerable joys. Pregnancy also effects women's bodies in many ways. Sometimes there are minimal visible after-effects, however women with more pronounced changes consult Dr. Graham to improve their situation.
Breast size, shape and firmness can change. For some women, breasts become much larger and uncomfortable; breast reduction is in order. For others, breasts sag, become much smaller, and loose their firm texture. In these situations clothes don't fit well. It becomes harder to find dresses, summer tops, and bathing suits that flatter the figure. Breast lift (mastopexy) or breast augmentation (implants) can help these situations. The two may be combined, known as augmentation mastopexy. Some of our patients tell us they look better than they did before children! http://www.expertplasticsurgeon.com/html/breast-lift-reduction.html#breast-lift
We are impressed by how trim, toned and fit some celebrities look after bearing children, but we know they have the best help and perhaps PhotoShop enhancement. Normal women's abdomens become stretched by pregnancies, some with prominent stretch marks (known as striae). Metabolism changes and body fat accumulates in different places such as the central / lower tummy and the "love handles" or flanks and iliac regions.
Liposuction addresses localised fat that does not respond to diet and exercise. It can produce great improvement when skin elasticity is good. http://www.expertplasticsurgeon.com/html/body.html#liposuction
Tummy tuck is also known as abdominoplasty - reshaping the abdomen. It is capable of removing stretch marks, removing loose (even overhanging) skin, tightening lax muscle tone, improving posture, and excising fat from the lower abdomen. There are modifications of the tummy tuck in which the incision is smaller and the skin and fat removal are less, for selected patients. http://www.expertplasticsurgeon.com/html/tummy-tuck.html
In conclusion, breast plus tummy (in your thirties or forties) equals mommy make-over. Therefore symbolically, B + T (30 - 40) = MMO

Tummy Tuck B&A photos by Sutton Graham, MD
Tummy tuck is called abdominoplasty by plastic surgeons; reshaping the abdomen.
These are some of our happiest patients! Women are excited when they see how much we can improve the effects of time, gravity, pregnancies, weight changes. If you want to see several examples follow this link: http://www.expertplasticsurgeon.com/photogallery/tummy-tuck-abdominoplasty-4814/case-1-10867-16331/32069
If the problems are loose skin, stretch marks across the lower abdomen, a roll-like collection of fat, and / or poor tone of the abdominal wall then tummy tuck can improve your appearance. If you lost quite a bit of weight then you often experience some of these. On the other hand if the problem is only localized fat that doesn't respond to diet and exercise, then liposuction may be a better procedure. During your consultation, we will check and explain how each procedure can help. http://www.expertplasticsurgeon.com/html/tummy-tuck.html
The procedure is done as an out-patient in our nationally accredited office surgery facility. You need assistance for a few days and will normally resume driving in 1 1/2 or 2 weeks. You wear a support girdle for 3 weeks post-op. We recommend starting vigorous exercise 6 weeks post-op. The recovery is more significant than for most other cosmetic surgery procedures, however we use special new techniques such as a continuous-infusion local anesthetic pump for 3-4 days after the procedure. This reduces you discomfort and decreases the need for narcotic pain medicine.
Tummy tuck is often combined with liposuction of the flanks and hip areas to improve the contour of the entire torso. Some patients choose to have breast enhancement (breast lift, breast augmentation, or breast reduction) during tummy tuck. Occasionally we do unrelated procedures such as lip augmentation by fat graft or liposuction of the neck and under-chin area.
If you want to know more, call 864-676-1707 or e-mail at info@expertplasticsurgeon.com
Patients coming to us from a distance should plan a local hotel stay. However most patients come from a 50-100 mile radius and don't have such an issue. Greenville, Spartanburg, Asheville, Anderson, Columbia, Hartwell, Highlands, Sapphire, Cashiers, Brevard, Henderson, Tryon, Landrum, Greer, Simpsonville, Newberry, Greenwood, Clemson, Lakes Hartwell & Keowee, Seneca, Pickens, Easley, and the Reserve and Cliffs Communities.

ASPS annual statistics are out. And the Top Five are...
The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) is the large national organization of board-certified plastic surgeons. Their 2008 statistics were recently published. Reconstructive surgery and minimally invasive cosmetic procedures (laser, fillers, neurotoxin) increased compared to 2007.
As expected cosmetic surgery was down, but a relatively small 9%. Articles in The New York Times (April 6th, "When All You Have Left Is Your Pride") and the Wall Street Journal ("Keeping Up Appearances") may explain why patients continue to seek care to enhance their appearance. In some circles, appearance may be critical in a time of high competition for jobs. Time Magazine had a recent article about the popularity of Botox for men.
The top 5 cosmetic surgery procedures in 2008: Breast Augmentation, Rhinoplasty, Liposuction, Eyelid Surgery, and Tummy Tuck. Botox was the most popular non-invasive treatment (5 million in 2008).

Just Released: 2008 statistics on plastic srugery
The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) just published its 2008 annual statistical comparisons. The main findings are:
For the first time in 12 years, liposuction is no longer the most popular cosmetic surgery -- it is breast augmentation. Botox is again the most popular non-surgical treatment.
The top 5 surgery procedures for women (92% of patients) were breast augmentation, liposuction, eyelid surgery, abdominoplasty and breast reduction. That is reflective of my practice, although facelift is also very common.
The number of procedures decreased 11% from 2007. Among males, procedures decreased 23%. 53% of procedures were performed in office-based surgery facilities. Total spending was $12 billion. Details are available at http://www.surgery.org/
